How to select materials for injection mold processing?

25-04-2024

At present, the injection mold processing industry is developing rapidly. There are tens of thousands of large and small injection mold processing manufacturers in China. So the issue of how to select materials in the injection mold manufacturing process is a problem that every enterprise must face. Xiamen Jinjiekun with 15 With years of experience in injection molding processing, I would like to analyze my experience in this regard.

Nowadays, the demand for standard parts in the injection mold processing industry is large and wide-ranging. The materials are mostly cold extruded from low carbon steel or low carbon low alloy steel.

If the customer requires the surface of the standard parts of the injection mold to have a certain level of wear resistance, treatments such as carburizing, quenching, and tempering can be carried out after cold extrusion. For plastic molds formed by casting methods, common Aluminum alloy, zinc alloy, bronze and cast iron materials, these materials have good casting properties. Especially for silicon-aluminum alloy and zinc-based alloy materials, these two materials have low melting points and good fluidity of dissolved materials; for plastic molds formed by superplasticity methods, the materials should be selected as much as possible. Crystalline alloys or eutectoid alloys to obtain good plasticity. For alloys that can obtain extremely fine grains, they also have good superplasticity after grain refinement treatment; for plastic molds formed by cutting or electrical machining It is said that the material is required to have good machinability, which can reduce the cost of material processing and shorten the manufacturing cycle. For electrical machining molding, the material is also required to have good conductivity.

When molding ABS, PVC and other plastic parts, the plastic will produce a corrosive gas at the molding temperature. Therefore, the parts that are in direct contact between the mold steel and the part should have certain excellent corrosion resistance. Such as martensitic stainless steel, age-hardened stainless steel and 18Ni maraging steel, etc., can also be processed with ordinary materials and then subjected to chromium plating surface treatment. When plastic parts made of hard materials such as glass fiber or quartz powder are added to the molded plastic, the high-hardness additives will reduce the fluidity of the plastic, causing serious wear on the mold surface. Therefore, mold materials for molding such plastics are often used. It can be quenched into mold steel made of high hardness materials, such as TIOA, Crl2MoV, etc. If some steel with low carbon content is selected, the mold steel should be carburized and quenched again.

The above is Jin Jiekun's selection of corresponding materials for different processing methods during the injection mold processing process, and at the same time, he analyzed the material selection issues for injection mold processing from two aspects, including the use environment after the injection mold is produced.
